Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is unlikely to go away any time soon, as the benefits are still being felt by thousands of businesses, two experts have pointed out.
Denis Pombriant, chief executive at Beagle Research Group, said that interest in ERP is continuing to rise, with many people now considering movement towards the cloud.
"We are in the middle of an ERP system replacement cycle, when systems installed at the turn of the century to deal with four-digit dates are ageing and being replaced by newer, more robust and less expensive solutions," he said.
Ray Wang, chief executive at Constellation Research, said the adoption of software-as-a-service gives companies an opportunity to refresh legacy software which could otherwise require additional resources and support systems.
Meanwhile, a recent survey carried out by SAP found that almost two-thirds of organisations are planning to implement ERP systems in the next two to three years as they aim to streamline their internal processes.

When making the decision to implement ERP software in your company, choosing the right ERP vendors is as important to success as any other step of the process. Many companies have made the mistake of selecting ERP vendors based on name alone or based on recommendations from others who may not be in the same industry.
This can lead to a dramatic increase in the cost of implementing ERP software and can greatly reduce the benefit your company will receive from the software. Before your company makes a decision, shop around for the best possible vendor to fit your company’s unique personality and needs.
Why you need ERP vendors to implement your software
ERP software is designed to integrate and combine all of the functions of a business into a single database. This helps streamline distribution of information and communications in the company. Implementation of the software is highly complex and will likely bring about changes in the staff and their work responsibilities. If implemented incorrectly, the software can be a hindrance to the business as opposed to a help. Because of the highly complicated nature of this process, it is important to hire professional ERP vendors to make sure the process goes smoothly.
What you should look for when shopping for ERP vendors
There are many factors to consider when choosing the right ERP vendors for your business. First, you want to find ERP vendors that are not only knowledgeable about your industry but who are also informed about the direction your business will likely take.
When talking with potential ERP vendors, make sure they seem interested in hearing your concerns and take the time to discuss all aspects of the implementation with you. Although the vendor is the implementation specialist, they should take the time to discuss and consider any suggestions from the company. If the vendor seems uninterested in your ideas or unwilling to have an in-depth discussion with you, walk away and find someone better suited to your company.
How you can be sure ERP vendors will provide good service?
There are many ERP vendors to choose from such as Oracle, SAP, Epicor, Microsoft Dynamics, and others. Each of them have partner companies who implement their ERP solutions. Before making a choice, check into the credibility of your potential ERP vendors and their partners.
Speak with former clientele and check the ERP vendors background to see if there is a history of providing excellent implementation and service. It is also a good idea to ask for a practical demonstration of ERP vendors services. This is an excellent way to see how the process will work and to get a feel for the vendor’s work style so you can determine whether it will work for your business.
Choosing the right ERP vendors is one of the most important aspects of buying and using ERP software in your business. A high quality vendor can help make the implementation easy and can ensure that your software is ready to go and can meet your needs. A bad vendor, on the other hand, can guarantee your failure in the implementation of your new software. The key to success is to shop carefully before choosing ERP vendors for your company.

The role of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software has been highlighted by the results of a survey conducted recently.
Computing.co.uk has revealed that approximately two-thirds of businesses in the UK are now operating some type of ERP software to assist with their day-to-day operations.
Commenting on the release of ERP – Building on the Basics, the website noted that demand for the technology was greatly affected by the recession and financial crisis of 2008.
However, it described how the years since have witnessed a return to steady growth as firms increasingly adopt the system.
The online portal told how it had surveyed 150 decision makers at UK businesses and roughly two-in-three had confessed to running ERP software.
Among the benefits of using such equipment are its ability to add reliability and speed to tasks within the workplace.
Forrester recently made a number of predictions that were reported by Computer Weekly, which included ERP software becoming more aligned with the needs of businesses.

Businesses planning to invest in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software over the coming months and years have been given a boost by one organisation.
Forrester has made a number of predictions relating to the future of the technology and the role it will continue to play within organisations, reported Computer Weekly.
One of the key trends it identified is that ERP software – such as SAP Business One – will, over time, be tailored and customized in such a way that it immediately begins to perform according to a company's requirements of it.
The expert body advised business leaders to expect the arrival of tools and add-ons that allow bosses to change the make-up of their software in order to respond to a changing market.
It suggested the most noticeable result of teaming standard ERP software with innovative applications is the increase in relevance the technology has to a particular firm.
IDG News Service recently reported the words of Ray Wang, chief executive of Constellation Research, who said many organisations need to update their ERP provisions.

The economic crash and slow recovery has forced companies to reinvent Business Intelligence and other tools, such as ERP software. Several cost-saving features of ERP software, like electronic documentation, came back between 2008 and 2010.
Now that the market is really on track to make a comeback, there is a heightened interest in driving sales, marketing automation systems like Customer Relationship Management and solutions for growing the top line, according to this Computing report.
There were major shifts in the global market after the financial crisis of 2008. Now, there is a clear demand for enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, based on a published computing white paper, “ERP – Building on the Basics”. This survey showed that two-thirds of 150 business leaders in the United Kingdom were running some kind of ERP software.
At the enterprise level, the report states the current penetration rates are around 60 percent. This has given vendors the opportunity to explore take-up rates in the lower and upper mid-market spaces as well as making their software more customer-oriented to engage a niche market.
Of those businesses who took the initiative of applying an ERP software solution, most executed it to somewhere in between its fullest potential. This limits many of the core financial components and can alter deployment of the entire business operation feature.
Lindsey Boullin, Sage senior commercial development manager, suggested that budgetary restrictions may stop business investing. She went on to say that IT directors and managers overcome this financial hurtle by working with commercial colleagues to understand the need of the business.
IT departments are taking the initiative and working diligently to improve ERP software. Gartner (News - Alert) managing vice president, Joanne Correia, said that major software vendors expanded product portfolios, acquired companies where it was appropriate for their plans and reached deeper into emerging markets in 2010.
According to this study, IDC (News - Alert) Worldwide Semi-annual Enterprise Resource Management Applications Tracker, sectors could see an increase of sizable markets of $36 billion in 2011.
Benefits found in well-executed ERP software can be endless. Research by Computing illustrates that companies already using a quality solution offers better financial reporting while delivering increased cash flow and liquidity. This plan of attack shows a clear sign that the markets are revitalizing.
A proven track record is the safest way to demonstrate why businesses should invest. Boullin believes the value of a business can be translated into a business case for the ERP software system. If the business can show the investment will have a positive impact that outweighs the cost and possible risk, then most businesses will invest.

Because ERP systems are so adept at rapidly compiling information and making predictions for the future so much simpler, periods of chaos, uncertainty, shifting needs or new requirements can all be made much less dangerous and financially unstable through the use of enterprise resource planning technology. Consider the following situations as examples of when an ERP set of programs may be an idea whose time has come.
Relocation
The nature of business in the modern world means that geographic boundaries mean much less than they once did. Companies constantly move, whether it is to larger facilities down the street or over the state line to take advantage of tax incentives. There are always changing variables when it comes to uprooting an entire enterprise and reconstituting it elsewhere, and these variables (whether they're new tax rates, changes in local regulation, size restrictions of new facilities or infrastructural needs that have changed) can be made less confusing with ERP systems.
Compliance
The Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Labor, OSHA and many other government agencies have quite a bit of power over the way that companies do business. Regulations can change very frequently, especially in today's volatile political climate. When a new law is passed that an entire industry has to comply with, enterprise resource planning software can make ensuring compliance of that law easy and economical.
Mergers and acquisitions
When one enterprise becomes part of another, there is a tremendous amount of paperwork, regulation and financial analyses that need to be done. This is a monumental task for a company of any size, but ERP systems will make it much simpler. In fact, two companies that already have ERP software at work for them can combine relatively easily once IT departments and software vendors have helped to coordinate a data sharing between the two systems.
Natural disasters
Earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and other random acts of nature can instantly destroy facilities, supplies, clients and other important entities that keep a company going. Recovering from unforeseen destruction is very difficult and can instantly cripple a business. However, enterprise resource planning makes rebounding from a spate of bad luck a much less dire situation. |
India has been named as one of the spots in the world where enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is being adopted at a fast pace.
Research body Gartner, releasing its Hype Cycle that looks at the information and communication technology industry, said there are several rising trends in the Asian country.
One of the major features is the widespread take-up of ERP software, with the analyst group predicting it will be "mainstream" within the next two years.
It said that this will be achieved by widening its focus from large businesses towards small and medium-sized enterprises too.
"In India, most of the technologies have a high to moderate benefit for organisations and will take two to five years for mainstream adoption," explained Asheesh Raina, principal research analyst at Gartner

Companies using and benefiting from enterprise resource planning (ERP) software have been advised that such technology should be treated in the same way as other assets.
Julian Swan, director of compliance marketing at the Business Software Alliance, said doing this is a sign that a company is "savvy".
He quoted research by the organisation released recently that found only six per cent of financial directors believe they are making the most of their software.
The expert went on to recommend running a software asset management program.
"Through this process, businesses can identity if they have too many licenses for some products and ultimately save money by deleting these in addition to ensuring each employee has a suitable software portfolio," Mr Swan explained.
BSA's study, which was published last month, also found that just seven per cent of business bosses are confident the software their company is running is deployed correctly.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is invaluable in a number of environments, but none more so than within the financial departments of companies.
A new report by Nick Castellina, senior research associate of the Aberdeen Group's Enterprise Applications research team, has examined the way in which the technology can benefit firms.
The study, entitled ERP's Impact on Financial Executives: Visibility Leads to Stability, makes it clear that ERP software has a "major" effect on the smooth running of such organisations.
It noted that not all finance executives are getting the most from their ERP software and examined ways to ensure they do.
Among the most effective uses of ERP technology include deploying it to gain full visibility over a financial set-up and to find opportunities to cut costs.
Another recent report by the Aberdeen Group found that wholesalers and distributors are among those who have most to gain from deploying ERP software.

Info technology has reworked the way we stay and the best way we do business. ERP, or Enterprise Resource Planning, is one among most widely implemented enterprise software program techniques in a wide variety of industries and organizations. On this quick article, we’ll try to concisely clarify the basic yet important concepts relevant to ERP.
What’s ERP – ERP is the acronym of Enterprise Resource Planning. ERP definition refers to both ERP software and business strategies that implement ERP systems. ERP implementation makes use of various ERP software program functions to improve the performance of organizations for 1) resource planning, 2) administration management and three) operational control. ERP software program consists of a number of software program modules that integrates activities throughout functional departments – from product planning, elements purchasing, stock management, product distribution, to order tracking. Most ERP software program techniques include software modules to help common enterprise actions – finance, accounting and human resources.
ERP Systems – ERP is rather more than a chunk of computer software. An ERP System includes ERP Software program, Enterprise Processes, Customers and Hardware that run the ERP software. An ERP system is greater than the sum of its elements or components. Those parts work together collectively to realize a standard goal – streamline and enhance organizations’ enterprise processes.
Historical past of ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is the evolution of Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP) II in Nineteen Eighties, whereas MRP is the evolution of Inventory Management & Control conceived in 1960s. ERP has expanded from coordination of manufacturing processes to the combination of enterprise-huge backend processes. When it comes to technology, ERP has advanced from legacy implementation to extra versatile tiered client-server architecture.
Benefits of ERP – ERP software program attempts to integrate enterprise processes across departments onto a single enterprise-huge information system. The major benefits of ERP are improved coordination across practical departments and elevated efficiencies of doing business. The implementation of ERP programs assist facilitate day-to-day administration as well. ERP software program systems is originally and ambitiously designed to support resource planning portion of strategic planning. In actuality, useful resource planning has been the weakest hyperlink in ERP apply due to the complexity of strategic planning and lack of adequate integration of ERP with Choice Assist Systems (DSS).
ERP Failures – We couldn’t conclude our temporary guide to ERP with out mentioning ERP failures. The failure of multi-million dollar ERP initiatives are reported occasionally even after 20 years of ERP implementation. We now have identified the 4 components of an ERP System – 1) ERP software program, 2) Business Processes that ERP software program helps, 3) Customers of ERP systems, and 4) Hardware and Operating Techniques that run ERP applications. The failures in one or more of those 4 elements may cause the failure of an ERP project.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is defined as a system that weaves together management information (both internal and external) across an entire organization. This includes finances, accounting, manufacturing, sales, service, customer relationship management, distribution, and any other sectors of a company. Essentially, ERP should power, connect, and facilitate everything an organization does—simultaneously.
But is your ERP software doing that? Are all sectors of your company moving harmoniously together toward a mutual goal?
If not, then your ERP technology is not doing what is should—and your business is wasting resources, losing time, and squandering the opportunity for growth and productivity afforded by ERP fully leveraged.
A few questions that you should be able to satisfactorily answer about your current business management software include:
• Is our ERP software transforming our business?
• Are our business practices standardized throughout our company, and is that standardization supported by our business technology?
• Is our data informing and empowering our staff?
If you can’t easily answer the above questions, then your ERP software simply isn’t accomplishing what it should. Technology should act as a catalyst, a unifier, a pathway toward a goal. When your business software isn’t accomplishing those ends, then your organization simply isn’t achieving what it could.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software products give companies a way to integrate and to manage information from multiple business processes. Many companies these days use ERP software tools to tie together data from financial and accounting systems, manufacturing systems, inventory planning, purchasing and order entry systems, and also supply chain, customer relationship management, marketing and HR systems. ERP products are basically designed to help companies run their businesses more efficiently by giving them a single, centralised view of all the data in their enterprise.
ERP products are typically sold in modular fashion with each module designed for a specific application need. For example, ERP finance and accounting module will typically include functions that allow companies to capture and manage all kinds of financial information such as general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, tax accounting and bill discounting. A sales, purchase, and inventory management ERP module can capture data related to purchase invoices, purchase orders, goods receipts, sales booking and sales invoices. A HR module might offer support for functions such as personnel management, payroll systems and time management applications.
Each ERP application module can run independently if needed. Each module also supports features that allow them to be easily connected or integrated with other modules. This sort of integration allows easy information sharing between the different modules and enables better operational and process efficiencies.
Large companies can derive substantial benefits from implementing ERP software across their enterprise. One of the biggest benefits of using ERP tools is that they can help companies reduce operational costs. A well-deployed ERP system enables companies to get an integrated view of their manufacturing, inventory, purchase and sales systems. This sort of an integrated view can enable companies to optimise inventory levels and production schedules and make smarter decisions relating to the manner in which they market and distribute their products. From an operational standpoint, ERP systems also enable better product and process standardisation as well.
ERP systems can also help companies better align their operational activities with their strategic goals. Because ERP systems enable better access to enterprise information, organizational planners can ensure that the business is being run in accordance with strategic plans and objectives. The broader information access allows companies to identify concerns and opportunities more quickly and gives them a way to utilize their workforce and other resources more effectively.
Importantly, ERP systems can help companies establish greater control over financial management and governance functions. The systems allow financial planners to gain deep visibility into operational and process-related costs. The technology helps them identify and weed out costly inefficiencies, improve profitability and manage risk better. Over the long term, an ERP software system can help support an organization's strategic planning ability by giving managers a historic, current and forward-looking view of their operational and process-related data.
